Infrared vs. Traditional Sauna

Infrared and traditional saunas can both bring sauna bathing into your home, but they create heat in different ways. That difference affects how each sauna feels, the temperatures you can expect, whether humidity is part of the session, and what the sauna may require from your home.

Neither type is universally better. The right choice depends largely on the kind of heat you prefer and the practical requirements you are comfortable with.

Here is what to consider when deciding between an infrared and traditional sauna.

1. How Infrared and Traditional Saunas Heat Differently

The most important difference is how each type of sauna produces and delivers heat.

A traditional sauna uses a heater to warm the sauna room and sauna stones. The heated room creates the high-temperature environment associated with traditional sauna bathing. You can also pour water onto appropriately heated stones to produce löyly—a burst of steam that temporarily changes the humidity and how the heat feels.

An infrared sauna uses infrared panels to produce radiant heat. Rather than relying primarily on heating the entire room to the temperatures associated with a traditional sauna, the panels radiate energy toward the person using the sauna.

That fundamental difference shapes many of the other considerations that follow.

2. Compare the Heat, Temperature, and Humidity

If you are choosing between the two, start with how you want your sauna to feel.

Traditional saunas generally operate at higher air temperatures. The surrounding room becomes hot, and adding water to the stones lets you introduce steam and temporarily increase the perceived humidity.

For people who prefer hot air, heated stones, and the ritual of adding water when they think of a sauna, traditional is the closer match.

Infrared saunas generally operate at lower air temperatures. You still feel the heat and begin to sweat, but the environment is different because radiant panels provide the heat without the traditional stone-and-water element.

Some people prefer that lower-temperature setting, particularly if they do not enjoy sitting in very hot ambient air. Others find that the intense heat and changing humidity are precisely what they want from a sauna.

3. Consider What Works Best in Your Home

Personal preference matters, but the sauna also has to work with your home.

Infrared systems are electrically powered, and some smaller residential models can have relatively straightforward power requirements. That does not mean every infrared sauna simply plugs into any household outlet. Requirements vary by model, particularly as sauna size and power increase.

Traditional electric saunas commonly have greater electrical demands and may require dedicated higher-voltage service. The heater also needs to be properly matched to the sauna enclosure. Wood-burning heaters are another traditional option and come with different installation requirements.

Rather than choosing based on assumptions about either technology, check the specifications for the particular sauna you are considering. Its power and installation requirements need to be practical for the intended location.

Sauna type and location are also separate decisions. Traditional saunas are not inherently outdoor-only, and infrared should not automatically be treated as indoor-only. Where a particular sauna can be installed depends on its design and requirements.

4. Think About Warm-Up, Use, and Day-to-Day Convenience

How you plan to use your sauna can make one heating style more appealing.

Infrared systems can provide radiant warmth relatively quickly. Unlike a traditional sauna, they do not first need to heat the room and a mass of sauna stones to the temperatures associated with traditional sauna bathing.

A traditional sauna needs time to heat the room and stones. Exactly how long that takes depends on the sauna itself, including its size, construction, heater, and starting conditions.

For some homeowners, warm-up time will be a minor consideration. If a traditional sauna session is something you plan around and enjoy, waiting for the room to heat may simply become part of the routine.

For others, particularly those who expect to fit sauna use into a busy schedule, quicker access to radiant warmth may make infrared more convenient.

5. Compare Maintenance and Ownership

Both infrared and traditional saunas require routine care, including cleaning surfaces that come into contact with sweat and following the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

Traditional saunas have a few additional elements to consider. Sauna stones deteriorate over time through repeated heating and cooling, so they need to be inspected and eventually replaced. When water is regularly used on the stones, proper drying and ventilation also become part of caring for the sauna.

A standard infrared sauna does not have heater stones or the traditional löyly process, so those particular maintenance tasks do not apply. Its surfaces, panels, controls, and other components still require appropriate care.

Where the sauna is installed can affect maintenance as well. An outdoor sauna, for example, may have exterior maintenance needs regardless of how it is heated.

6. What About Health Benefits?

Health claims can make this comparison more confusing than it needs to be.

Traditional Finnish sauna has a larger and more established body of long-term research, including studies that have found associations with cardiovascular and other health outcomes. Infrared sauna has also been studied and produces measurable responses to heat, but the research is more limited.

That does not mean traditional sauna is universally healthier, nor should findings from traditional sauna research automatically be applied to infrared sauna. The two heating methods should not be assumed to produce identical effects.

Claims that infrared sauna provides superior “detoxification,” recovery, or other health benefits also go beyond what the available evidence can establish. For a home purchase, those claims are not a sound reason to choose one type over the other.

Both types expose the body to heat. If you have a relevant medical condition, are pregnant, are sensitive to heat, or take medication that may be affected by heat, seek individualized medical guidance before using a sauna.

7. Which Type of Sauna Is the Better Fit for You?

For many homeowners, the decision becomes fairly straightforward once you focus on the differences that will affect regular use.

A traditional sauna may be the better fit if you want:

  • hotter ambient air;
  • heated sauna stones;
  • the ability to add water and experience löyly;
  • a classic traditional sauna routine;
  • the sauna type with the more established long-term research base.

An infrared sauna may be the better fit if you prefer:

  • lower ambient air temperatures;
  • radiant-panel heat;
  • an experience without the traditional stone-and-water element;
  • potentially simpler electrical requirements with some residential models;
  • relatively quick access to radiant warmth.

Neither type automatically wins on price, safety, overall quality, indoor or outdoor suitability, or total ownership cost. Those factors depend on the particular sauna, installation, and home.

Start with the distinction that will matter every time you use the sauna: Do you prefer the hotter room, stones, and changing humidity of a traditional sauna, or the lower-temperature radiant heat of infrared? Then make sure the sauna you prefer is practical for your space, power supply, and expectations for ownership.

That is a more useful way to choose than looking for a universal winner.
